Lily Fisher, a young author, recently shared a book she wrote, We Can Always Be Kind with the Orleans/Niagara BOCES’ Newfane Learning Center (NLC) students. The Counselor team at the school invited Lily and Mike Fisher to their Kindness event as part of their anti-bullying activities.
Lily is the daughter of Mike Fisher, an educator at the Orleans/Niagara BOCES’ Center for School Improvement and Professional Development and he could not have been prouder. “She is a wonder. I was so proud of her with those kids. She is a natural. She intuitively worked the room. I can’t wait to see her as a teacher in her own classroom.” Lily is a senior at Sweet Home High School and plans on attending SUNY Buffalo and begin working towards being an elementary school teacher.
In the book, Lily wrote about different ways that friends can be kind to one another and appreciate each other’s differences. Lily has been to many schools to talk about her books, about becoming a writer, and her process of creating. At the Newfane Learning Center, she read her book to the students, answered questions about how she came up with the idea, and explained how she did illustrations. The illustrations were done by knitting different little creatures by hand and then photographing them in different scenes.
Counselor Lauren James says the students loved interacting with Lily. “Lily read her book about kindness in order to introduce the SEL (Social Emotional Learning) topic of bullying prevention and self-advocacy. Students loved listening to her book We Can Always Be Kind and asking her questions about the writing and artistic processes. She also brought a friendship bracelet for each student as a gift and students made a collective art piece. Students used natural materials and their words and ideas about kindness to create a kindness mandala. NLC students enjoyed hearing from a student author and working together to create an art piece. Many students are still rocking their friendship bracelets and we continue to work to spread creativity and kindness!”
